Are Hollow Bodies Coming Back?

Author: guitartrends  //  Category: bodies

I see more and more hollow body electric guitars these days.  Not just on the web, music videos and in magazines; but also in guitar stores.  I think every manufacturer of electric guitars makes at least one hollow body electric guitar. Some make more, even a lot more.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that it’s the solid body guitar that is the newcomer on the block.  Hollow body electric guitars were manufactured as far back as the 1930’s: well before the first solid body electrics of the early 1950’s were manufactured.

My take is that the hollow type electrics have slowly been losing ground to the solid body electrics in terms of sales. I know I know, guitars players of all kinds have some hollow body fanatics among them.  Jazz guitar players in particular tend toward that hollow body electric sound.  But really, I don’t think there are all that many jazz players out there, even those that are fake jazzing it.

So I’m kinda confused about why there are so many hollow bodies guitars out there.  I could be that you can play them unplugged?  Or maybe the attraction is that they are lighter?  I mean, they are almost always big-assed guitars, and that’s a show-stopper for me.

I dunno, what’s your take?
