How fat is too fat?

Author: guitartrends  //  Category: neck trends

I am really confused about the growing number of fat, baseball bat style guitar necks coming from companies like Gibson and Yamaha. Gibson describes these as “50’s necks”.
When I was growing up, buying a used electric guitar meant something made in the 1960’s, not the 1950’s. I suppose Eric Clapton grew up with 1950’s guitars, but he is over 60 years old now. The electric guitars Gibson and Fender made in the 1960’s had necks that were thinner and flatter than their 1950’s counterparts. The idea was that you can play faster on a thinner neck. Good idea!
So what am I confused about? Who exactly wants these fat necked guitars? Not me, I grew up with 60’s guitars. And they are faster players than a 50’s neck, when you need to play fast. Also, in my observations, it is the fat necked guitars that are the slow sellers. Most guitar players don’t want them. I don’t understand why companies like Gibson are pushing these old style necks. Can anyone explain it to me?
