Modern Tools for Learning Songs
Author: guitartrends // Category: practice
I was scrambling to learn some new songs before band practice the other day, and I realised the tools I use to learn songs have changed over the years.
Then
I still remember learning songs on vinyl records, having to pick up and drop the turntable needle if you wanted to hear a section over again.

Now
Today, I use the Amazing Slow Downer to slow down and loop parts of songs I am working on. This is a terrific way to speed up your song learning time.

Then
If you wanted a tuner or a metronome, you bought one at a music store.
Now
Today, you can get tuners and metronomes online, usually for free. You can still buy the real thing if you need the portability.
Then
You took guitar lessons, from a guitar teacher. You had to pack up your guitar and travel to where the teacher was. And travel back home afterwards.

Now
Instead of taking your guitar with you to your weekly guitar lesson, you can receive guitar lessons online at home. Online Electric Guitar Lessons are generally well presented and easy to understand. You can learn at your speed, and not have to catch a bus in the rain.
There are also instructional DVD’s. GuitarWorld is one company that is doing this. It’s like having several pro guitar teachers in front of you, and the DVD basically comes with the GuitarWorld magazine.

Then
If you wanted to learn a particular song well, you had to either:
- buy the album
- borrow the album
- record the album (in real time)

Now
Now of course, we have MP3 files. We also have MP3 players that hold thousands of songs. And you can take your MP3 player to band practice to listen as a group.

And you can receive and play emailed MP3 files. Less travel and more time to practice.

I freaking love Amazing Slow Downer. One of my favorite pieces of software ever.

LOL, I do not know what I would do without the Amazing Slow Downer.
